Magical Mechanical Music: The History and Demonstration of Musical Boxes, Barrel Organs and Other Automatic Instruments
Kevin McElhone
will explain the history and workings of these fascinating mechanical instruments in a non-technical and entertaining manner. He will demonstrate each instrument’s musical attributes.

8 November
Do You Remember This? A Potpourri of Nostalgia of the Post-War Years
Gerry Burrows
will talk about a number of topics relating to spending money at sweetshops, the grocer, the chemist, going to the seaside on holiday and past times and entertainments of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. He will illustrate his talk with the popular music of the time.

This is our annual one-day conference on local history and archaeology, highlighting current research.
Venue: The Council Suite, Harborough District Council Offices, Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough (entrance on corner of building facing Church Square).

The Inns and Pubs of Harborough
Peter Wilford
, of Market Harborough Movie makers will present this film documentary tracing the history and locations of over 50 past and present hostelries in Market Harborough, Great and Little Bowden. Completed late 2004, the work took over two years to research, write, film, edit, and sound track. The film includes a number of previously unpublished old photographs and documents.

The Harboro Rubber Company 1894 – 2006
Anne French
will be introducing a film on the history and present day developments of The Harboro Rubber Company. This film made by Market Harborough Movie Makers traces the developments of one of the oldest remaining manufacturing businesses in the town. Anne will field questions at the end of the showing.

14 March
Annual General Meeting
Please try to attend this meeting which will help us to shape the continuing future of your Society. The AGM will be followed by a talk on:
Shopkeeping in the 1950s in Britain
George Seward will talk concerns aspects of the retail trade in the post-war years and beyond, referring to the products, (many now vanished) rationing, food and product shortages and practices that developed in relation to the period. George will also be drawing on his own experiences as a manager of a shop in the 1950s.

A History of British Printmaking
Robin Ingall
will give an illustrated talk on the origins and development of print making in Britain, including an explanation of printing methods such as wood cuts, copper engraving, engraving generally, lithographs and other techniques.

9 May
The Battlefield of Naseby
Martin Marix Evans
will undertake an examination of the battlefield of Naseby including developments in cooperation with the Battlefield Trust in creating viewing areas and a Battlefield centre for the general public. Naseby is now considered to be one of the four most important battles ever fought on British soil. Martin will also present new interpretations of the battle in the light of new evidence.

13 June
Summer Visit - A
Guided Tour of Foxton Locks
Peter Chowns, the Environment and Heritage manager for British Waterways will give a tour of the Foxton Locks and Inclined Plane area explaining the many developments that have already taken place, are under the course of construction/implementation as well as plans for the future. The reinstatement of the inclined plane, works to the lower arm, clearance and re-watering of the upper arm, a major new interpretation point for the inclined plane, restoration of top lock cottage - it now looks as it did 100 /200 years ago - and new signage through out the site are all things planned or implemented over the last few years.
We will meet at the new lower car park (close to the Foxton Locks Inn) at 6.15 for 6.30pm.
